Project
(a) Mopungchukit Village
The village is 15 km away from Mokokchung. A JFMC has recently been
formed. The committee covers 6 clans and has an executive committee of
18 members representing 3000 Ordinary members. Women are represented
both in the general body as well as in the executive committee. The
villagers are quite conscious of the need for protection of forests.
They also understand in the current context that Jhumming is not a sound
practice and are preparing for sedentary agriculture by reducing area
under Jhum and converting the surplus area into tree cultivation.
(b) Mongsenyimti Village
The village is located in Mokokchung District. The village has
approximately 50-60 families with community forests, clan forests, and
jhum blocks. It is an Ao tribal area, an important clan of the Nagas.
For subsistence, the villagers depend on 11 Jhum coupes to work on
11-year rotation. The crops currently raised are rice, maize, chillies,
gourd, cucumber, beans, sweet potato etc. The villagers understand the
futility of Jhum cultivation on land with low productivity and have
resolved in the committee to reduce the no. of coupes to 2 and put the
rest of the area under tree crop. The field site location is a 5 hour
drive from Jorhat. Jorhat is connected to both Calcutta and Gauhati by
Air. A JFMC has recently been formed through election.
