CFI holds a reception to open its new office in Phnom Penh for its
Community Forestry Alliance for Cambodia (CFAC) project that brings
together a diverse group of local NGOs and government officials.
With support from USAID’s Cambodia Mission, and the John D. & Catherine
T. MacArthur Foundation, CFI has initiated a project to bring together a
diverse group of partners to work on a variety of community forestry
initiatives in Cambodia. Dr. Mark Poffenberger and the CFAC staff held an
opening reception at the new CFAC office in Phnom Penh to discuss the
objectives of the project with members of local NGOs, international NGOs,
and government officials including the USAID’s Cambodia Mission’s Acting
Director, Susan Merrill. The goals of the proposed project are manifold,
including enabling communities to protect natural resources critical to
their survival, enhancing the livelihoods of people living in poverty, and
strengthening the capacity of civil institutions and local government to
work with communities in managing natural resources. Ultimately, the
long-term objective of the program is to support the development of civil
society institutions and processes that lead to more sustainable and
equitable resource management in Cambodia. Read More…
CFI is awarded grant from USAID to extend and expand its projects in Asia
under the Community Forestry Support Program-Phase II
CFI has been awarded a grant from USAID’s Global Development Alliance to
continue expanding its community forestry projects in Asia. Because
decades of commercial logging, forest fires, and uncontrolled utilization
have resulted in massive deforestation, CFI is committed to developing
projects under Phase II of its Community Forestry Support Program (CFSP-II)
to stabilize natural forest resources and biodiversity, and restore
economic productivity by devolving management rights and responsibilities
to local governments and forest dependent peoples. Read More…
CFI’s regional policy project in the seven states that make up Northeast
India is in the process of completing 15 case studies
Funded by the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, CFI’s project
involves a three-year effort to guide the formation and operation of a
regional policy working group to formulate recommendations for enabling
legal frameworks and strategies to facilitate community-based forest
biodiversity conservation. With CFI’s technical and financial support, the
Working Group for Northeast India has led the way by forming research
teams to document the existing community structures that can facilitate
greater community management of natural resources. These case studies and
state profiles will be presented at the next working group meeting in May,
2004. In addition, CFI has published a historical overview of the legal
structures in NE India to assist in negotiating new government policies.
